Swedish is the best-known type of bodywork performed today making it a “traditional” massage which is perfect for athletes and weekend warriors. That is to say, it is an invigorating and effective therapy perfect for relief from stiff and sore muscles. Swedish uses stoking, tapping, vibration, kneading and stretching of muscles. Massage strokes to your body always working in the direction of blood returning to yours heart.
Swedish is considered the foundation for related therapies such as Deep Tissue Massage and Sports Massage. It is based on our Western culture’s concept of anatomy and physiology—as opposed to the energy work common in Asian massage practices, which often work the recipient’s meridians, the energy pathways throughout your body. As a result, Swedish is meant to stimulate your blood circulation, improve the circulation of your immune system, release your tight muscles, improve your range of motion, and ultimately help reduce your pain.
If you’ve never had a massage before, Swedish would be a good fit for you. That is to say, most people get a 60-minute Swedish massage, but 75 or 90 minutes will give me more time to work the muscle tissue, achieve results and it will feel all the better to you.
For example, remember that last time you were out with your pals playing basketball or tennis, having way too much fun and found when you got home you were too tired and sore to do anything! Next time this happens, think Swedish!
